KARINA PASIAN

This is a 57-minute documentary about a very talented young girl, Karina Pasian, who, through hard work, sacrifice, and the push of her father, sings so well that she catches the expert eyes of Mr. Quincy Jones who takes her to Rome for her debut performance in the We are the Future Concert.

Karina is twelve years old and loves to sing, dance, and act. At age three, Karina has her first introduction to music by her baby sitter. While taking care of her, the baby sitter teaches her to play the piano. She started ballet at age three when the family lived in the Bronx. Upon moving to Manhattan at age four, she began her formal musical and artistic training at the Ballet Hispanico, a special school for the arts, on 89th Street. There she takes lessons in ballet, flamenco, piano, modern dance, hip-hop, jazz, and Spanish Folk. Karina meets her vocal coach, Boris, at age nine. Boris helps her with vocals, posture, the piano, and most importantly, how to be a great singer.

The documentary shows the challenges Karina faces having to sell herself to potential Producers in New York, Florida, and Hollywood. In one day Karina performs over twenty songs at three different locations. It shows the challenges a young child faces spending many hours in studios doing songs over and over again. And while the average kid is at home watching television or playing with dolls or friends, Karina is singing on her Karaoke machine. At first it was difficult for Karina to cope with such a demanding schedule. Nonetheless, during these episodes Karina begins to learn to art of self-discipline, hard work and sacrifice. Now, Karina can handle the most rigorous performance schedules.

The documentary is funny, compelling, and strikes at your very soul. The tenacity with which a young child pursues that which she loves while overcoming sibbling rivalry and the separation and divorce of her parents, is worth the watch.
